Seven Mile Beach Golf Club Review: Tasmania's Most Talked-About New Course

Have you noticed everyone talking about Seven Mile Beach Golf Club near Hobart, Tasmania?

The Lucky Golfer travelled south in January to play eighteen of the most picturesque and inventive holes we have seen. The public course had only recently opened, but the scale of the dunes, the unusual design ideas and the raw coastal setting already made it feel like a destination.

Here is what stood out during our first round.

The arrival feels properly remote

The drive into Seven Mile Beach feels like you are heading well off the beaten track, even though the course is only a short distance from Hobart Airport and within easy reach of the city.

That contrast is part of the appeal. One moment you are on a normal road; the next, you are surrounded by coastal dunes, native grasses and a golf landscape that feels enormous.

It is a course made for walking

Seven Mile Beach is a walking course, and some of the holes are long. Bring comfortable shoes, travel light and be ready for the elements. The walk is a genuine part of the experience because the views and the shape of the ground reveal themselves gradually.

We were too busy taking it all in to worry about the distance.

The design keeps surprising you

The course does not rely on one signature moment. It keeps presenting new angles, unusual decisions and features that make you stop and look twice.

  • The turf sounds different. Some greens and teeing areas have a hollow quality underfoot that catches you by surprise.

  • The fourth is a blind par four. A huge dune obscures the green on the approach, so choosing a line and trusting it becomes the whole challenge.

  • The eighth has two greens. It is an unexpected design choice that immediately becomes a talking point.

  • Anything outside the fairway can disappear into sand and dunes. Accuracy matters, and carrying a few spare balls is a wise move.

  • The halfway stop is a beauty. Near the ninth, a small halfway house offers a welcome chance to refuel before heading into the second nine.

Raw now, with a huge future

There is still work to do before every detail feels fully mature, but that is part of the fascination. You can see the bones of a remarkable course: dramatic land, inventive holes and a playing experience unlike the usual parkland round.

It is easy to understand why Seven Mile Beach is generating so much conversation. We would return without hesitation.
